My name is Damien and I am a Red Seal certified Electrician.
Back in 2000, I started my post-secondary education at Malaspina University-College (now Vancouver Island University) with the goal of becoming a teacher in the elementary/secondary school system. After transferring to begin my 3rd year at University of Victoria, I was heavily inspired by a particular professor (as one often is) and ultimately changed my final goal to attaining employment in the City Planning world. When this path required further, costly education, I readjusted again and opted for a career in the trades.
On the heels of my graduation from the UVic in 2005, I began working as an apprentice electrician. During the course of the next 14 years, I experienced almost every avenue of the electrical world – from residential and commercial service work to industrial construction, quality control, safety advising, and human resource management.
In the summer of 2019, I came across a posting for an Electrical Instructor opening at VIU in my hometown of Nanaimo, BC. It was one of those moments where you see something and immediately go, “that is for me.” It fit, in every possible way. From my initial goal of instructing (which I hadn’t entirely given up on), to spending time as both an academic and vocational student, to working in nearly every sector of the electrical field, I knew that my experience was both deep and broad.
In September of 2019, I officially began my path on the instruction of adult learners in the field of Construction Electrical. I love the challenge every single day, and I particularly enjoy seeing the ‘aha!’ moment when a concept or theory clicks.
In my free time, I love to be with my wife of 18 years, my two sons, and our family mutt, Penny. I both coach and play soccer, and I relish any chance to get outside, hike, and shoot landscape photographs.
